Pierce finished chess club last week. He wasn't old enough to go to the final tournament, where all the schools in the district play against one another. He has to be in third grade for that. But he went to every practice and kept his enthusiasm for the game the whole semester.
He sure is going to miss chess club the rest of the year. He's doing Odyssey of the Mind now, so hopefully that'll fill the gap somewhat. And I'm sure Paul and I will be roped into numerous chess games at home. The one thing Pierce wants most for Christmas is a game he saw in the MindGames catalog called Solitaire Chess, which he can play on his own. I do believe this game is going to be under our tree this Christmas. Pierce will be ready to return to his beloved chess club, come next fall!
Debbie told me about Pierce and the chess club, I felt bad that he couldn't go to the tournament. Carrie did that one year, I think they had it at the middle school. I have never seen so many kids playing chess. I have a feeling that the area chess players will soon know who he is.
I KNEW he'd be genius material!!!...:)JP
Yay for Pierce! Oooo, that Solitaire chess program is going to have him teaching ma and pa a few tricks :-)
Way to go Pierce oh Lisa what an incredible young man he is becoming. Hug B
He may be the next chess champ when he gets older.
glad he latched on, a great game for cold winter nights
oh you need to take him to mountain lake and play the big chess game that is outside! i'll post a picture next week you can show him!
I am so impressed with Pierce's ability in and joy in chess. That is excellent! That game sounds great. Yes, he will soon be teaching the parents some moves. :-)
What a cute little smarty pants! I can only imagine how excited he'll be when he's old enough to go to the tournament!
Such a smart little guy. I'm glad he'll be getting the chess game! :)
What a totally cool hobby he has taken to!
so cool. my sis and i learned to play chess with each other as kids, but i have no idea how to do so now.
Wonderful! Great training in logical problem solving.
Blessings and Bear hugs!
What a cutie and a smarty! Hugs for your son.Linda@Wetcreek Blog
Congrats on him learning and liking chess. I was on the chess team in Jr. High, way back when... I now play on the computer sometimes, but I swear, the computer cheats!
linking up for R5F too,
He'll be so ready for the competition if Santa leaves him a solitary to practice on..(I've figured PP out :-))
One game I have never learned!
Very cute Chess player :)
Sad that I never learned chess. Maybe that should be a New Year's resolution.
It's so cool that Pierce likes chess!
Amy learned to play when she was in the 6th grade-and her aunt got her solitaire chess. She loved it! The sad thing was, at school Amy was in a tournament, and beat an older boy who was not a nice kid. He lost, and then accused Amy of cheating, and so the teacher said to be fair, Amy had to forfeit her win. That still makes me mad!!
I love that he loves chess. I was never attracted to it, but my Lolo likes it too. (I think of it as a brainy game)
The solitaire chess sounds awesome!
How awesome! Games like that are wonderful for the brain. David tried to teach me chess before but it was hard for me to learn and he always beat me!
He is very smart!!! A lot of kids just get bored because it is so hard, but he perseveres. And that is amazing at his age. Phil's chess class will not even let anyone in unless they are forth or fifth graders or in the gifted class. I bet you anything when he gets another year or so, he will be in the gifted class.
My oldest three had a chess game they cold play alone too, a computer generated game. I don't know what happened to it, maybe one of the older boys took it with them when they moved. :) Chess is fun.
I used to play with my Dad when I was growing up. A great thinking/strategy game!
I love chess and this just made my heart smile! I love when the young ones fall in love with Chess!
I volunteer in a first grade class and teach the children beginner chess...they love it!
Just don't let him play against any computer named Big Blue.
All right Pierce!
He's a smart boy! Yay!
An interesting hobby, I guess he will be a great chess player forward.
so cool. congrats Pierce!
he's very smart!
happy weekend, lisa.
His eyes are amazing.
Wow---I never learned to play chess... Too complicated for me!!!!! ha... I had a hard enough time with Bridge and Canasta.... ha ha
You have a very smart little boy, you know. So glad you all are promoting all of this extra education...
He's such a little cutie! I can almost see his big grin when he opens the chess game on Christmas morning!
Hi Lisa, dear friend,
Wooowww! Pierce is so very handsome. What an awesome boy!
I love his precious face with his gorgeous blue eyes...
The Game of Chess.
That is something I used to play as a child with my father and grandfather. I do NOT PLAY chess anymore, but I like watching others play it.
Good Luck on his endevours, Lisa!
Thank you for your kind emails!
Happy Holidays to all of you!
I love playing chess. I think it's great he has started playing at such a young age.
Great for him !!! I never was any good at that lol ! Great job
Something to be proud about!! How great that he loves it so much at this age.
Olá Lis; como se deve orgulhar de bela criança....

You got him started on something terrific - how wonderful!
Pierce plays Chess? That is Amazing! :)
I love this! Our son was a chess enthusiast, too. I played with him until he got so smart he could beat me in two moves.
Chess can be a difficult game to learn. I am impressed!
