Our Chess Enthusiast

Pierce finished chess club last week.  He wasn't old enough to go to the final tournament, where all the schools in the district play against one another.  He has to be in third grade for that.  But he went to every practice and kept his enthusiasm for the game the whole semester.
He sure is going to miss chess club the rest of the year.  He's doing Odyssey of the Mind now, so hopefully that'll fill the gap somewhat.  And I'm sure Paul and I will be roped into numerous chess games at home.  The one thing Pierce wants most for Christmas is a game he saw in the MindGames catalog called Solitaire Chess, which he can play on his own.  I do believe this game is going to be under our tree this Christmas.  Pierce will be ready to return to his beloved chess club, come next fall!

Debbie told me about Pierce and the chess club, I felt bad that he couldn't go to the tournament. Carrie did that one year, I think they had it at the middle school. I have never seen so many kids playing chess. I have a feeling that the area chess players will soon know who he is.

Sad that I never learned chess. Maybe that should be a New Year's resolution.

It's so cool that Pierce likes chess!

Amy learned to play when she was in the 6th grade-and her aunt got her solitaire chess. She loved it! The sad thing was, at school Amy was in a tournament, and beat an older boy who was not a nice kid. He lost, and then accused Amy of cheating, and so the teacher said to be fair, Amy had to forfeit her win. That still makes me mad!!

I love that he loves chess. I was never attracted to it, but my Lolo likes it too. (I think of it as a brainy game)
The solitaire chess sounds awesome!

How awesome! Games like that are wonderful for the brain. David tried to teach me chess before but it was hard for me to learn and he always beat me!

He is very smart!!! A lot of kids just get bored because it is so hard, but he perseveres. And that is amazing at his age. Phil's chess class will not even let anyone in unless they are forth or fifth graders or in the gifted class. I bet you anything when he gets another year or so, he will be in the gifted class.

My oldest three had a chess game they cold play alone too, a computer generated game. I don't know what happened to it, maybe one of the older boys took it with them when they moved. :) Chess is fun.
