Around the Farm - Gardening, Flowers, Chicks Updates

Buddha Hen ended up with 6 little chicks to care for.
She's been doing a great job watching over them.
 Proud Mama!

The garden - in spite of all the gravel - is growing.
I spend a great deal of my time weeding.
Below you see the rows of beets and turnips, and to the far right zucchini.
No actual vegetables yet, but we did enjoy some turnip greens in an omelet.

And then here are the beans, beans, and tomatillos.  The tomatillos are looking mighty plentiful - so I'm going to be on the lookout for recipes.  I didn't actually think they'd grow, so it's a bit of a surprise that we have so many plants.  They're actually doing much better than our regular tomatoes, of which we only had 3 plants come up and they're going pretty slow for now.

Zucchini just about ready to bloom!

The beans just beat the zucchini to it, by blooming first:

The following pictures are for Nancy at A Rural Journal.  She hosts a weekly photo linkup called Your Sunday Best, and this past Sunday asked what was in bloom where you lived.
I've got lilies:

Little roses, that have bloomed wild here since before we were here.  I guess someone planted them a long time ago.  Most years I don't get to see them in bloom, because Paul weed whacks them to death.  This year I got lucky.  But I guess he never promised me a rose garden...

Hydrangeas, just getting started.
Later we'll get some blue and purple blooms.

An old family recipe for Meatloaf - Muffin Tin Monday

We're getting our use out of this giant egg!  Today Pierce had my grandmother's meatloaf recipe.  I make it several times of year, but I also healthy it up a tad by using ground turkey instead of meat, and this time I also used Panko crumbs instead of bread crumbs.  It was very good.  He also had some bowtie pasta salad I had made, and a bear muffin cup of caramel mousse (by far, the most popular event of this meal).
Dutch Meatloaf
1 1/2 lb. ground beef (or turkey)
1 cup fresh bread crumbs
 1 medium onion, chopped
1/2 can Hunt's tomato sauce
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/2 can Hunt's tomato sauce (again!)
1 cup water
2 tbsp. prepared mustard
2 tbsp. vinegar
2 tbsp. brown sugar
Lightly mix first 7 ingredients.  Form into loaf and place in a shallow pan.  Place in moderate oven at 350*.  Combine the remaining ingredients.  Pour over meat loaf in oven, bake for 1 1/4 hours, basting occasionally.  Serves 4-6.

This recipe freezes very well too - I made 4 batches when I was about 35 weeks pregnant with the twins, froze it, and then it made for easy dinners right after they were born.

Best Iced Brownies Ever! My Favorite Brownie Recipe.

It's not that I'm a total brownie expert, but I do love them.  I've made many a brownie recipe from scratch, but the following is my absolute favorite.  It comes from my Baylor Homecoming cookbook.

Iced Brownie Bars:
2 cups sugar
1 cup margarine, softened
4 eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
3/4 cup cocoa
1 cup flour
1 tsp baking powder
Icing (ingredients to follow)

Cream together sugar and margarine.  Add eggs and beat well.  Add vanilla, then stir in remaining ingredients.  Spread in a greased 9x13 pan.  Bake at 350* for 30 minutes.  Cool.  Spread icing on brownies.

Icing:
1 cup brown or white sugar
3 tbsp cocoa
3 1/2 tbsp margarine
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup milk
1 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla

Mix the first 5 ingredients in a medium saucepan until margarine melts and all is combined.  Cool slightly.  Stir in powdered sugar and vanilla.  Frost immediately.

To make things more fun, I will be picking one blog that links up by Random.org at the end of the week.  That blogger will win a set of 4 vintage glass peanut butter parfait dishes.   These dishes are highly collectible and were how peanut butter was packaged back in the 50s.  They are perfect for little summery parfaits and desserts!  Special thanks to my Mom for donating these for the prize.

Aren't they totally cute?

To be eligible to win, you must link up to the blog hop the week of July 8-15 with a post about a treasure you have found.  You must also display the "Best Treasure Find" button on either your side bar or the actual blog post.  I will notify the winner by email and he/she will have 48 hours to respond before a new winner is chosen.  I'm willing to ship anywhere!

Memory Lane Friday - 6th Grade

Memory Lane Friday is a weekly blog carnival, where you can blog about your memories and link up.  All are welcome.  Today's theme is 6th grade.  So I went to 6th grade in the 80s.  Here I am sporting my super cool 80s sweatshirt, along with my Safety Patrol gear (nerd alert!).  I never could get my bangs to tease up as well as the other girls.

Things I remember from 6th grade:

The mom of my friend, Chelsea, who was a psychologist, came to school to talk about her profession.  She brought with her a brain, in formaldehyde.  I was fascinated, and touched it when she took it out.  Another girl had to run to the bathroom to throw up.

Playing a game called four-square with a red ball during gym almost everyday.

Making a globe out of paper mache and painted continents.

Long summer days at the barn with my friend, Chelsea.  She'd let me ride her horse Bargain.

The era of the pogo ball.  I could hop mine around the entire neighborhood.  Mine was purple and green (slightly more fluorescent than this picture I found on google) and had a full disk instead of the disk with the edges bevelled in.
My Dad got Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and had to rush to the hospital.  It was terrifying, because I'd never really seen him sick before, other than a cold here and there.

Helping my friend, Nicole, deliver papers on her paper route.

Dollar matinee movies - Big Top PeeWee comes to mind.

Press on nails.

A chemistry set, in the basement.  And no, I didn't blow anything up!

Would you like to link up to Memory Lane Friday?  It's easy.  Just add your website to the linky.  Be sure to visit the blogs of others who link up, and leave them a comment too. Next week there is no theme.

A Rescue - Granny Rose and Sarah

Sarah and Granny Rose last left off HERE.

The first thing Sarah thought when she woke up on the forest floor was, “Where am I, and why am I here?”  The second thing was, “What is that stench?”  That’s when it all came back to her – the fleeing from home after Granny Rose’s death, the gorging on the berries, and the sickness.  She was parched, her throat as dry as the July garden soil, but at least her stomach no longer churned.  As she sat up, her head spun, and she had to lie back down.  She needed to find water so she could wash and drink.  Sitting up again, more slowly, the earth shifted softly, but not as rough as the first time.  She steadied herself by placing her hands on the ground.  And when a voice spoke, she almost fell over again.

“You’re in a fine mess, aren’t ya?  I thought you was gonna sleep all day.”

Sarah’s eyes widened at the sight of a girl – at least she seemed to be a girl with long tawny braids falling to her waist.  But everything else – her worn bib overalls and her wide brimmed felt hat – everything else screamed boy.  Sarah instinctively tried to push herself away, to give herself some space from this unknown girl, but she didn’t have the strength in her arms.

“Don’t be ‘fraid.  I won’t hurt ‘cha.  I’m Genesis Louisa Blevins.  But my friends call me Genny.  My Papa used to be a travelin’ preacher, so he named me after the Bible and after my mama, but then he said God tol’ him to stop all that harassin’ people ‘bout hell and damnation, to put down the Good Book and do some hard work to feed his daughter.  Tha’s me.  He been workin’ the coal mines ever since.  Say, you got a name or what?”

Sarah just stared.  She’d never met anyone that talked so much.  She wasn’t sure her voice would work, but she opened her mouth and said, simply, “It’s Sarah.”

“Alrighty, Sarah, I didn’t get to all my traps yet, for watchin’ you and waitin’ for you to get up, but we gotta get you washed.  Leechy Creek ain’t far, we’ll go there.  It’s called Leechy Creek on account of it’s got a lot of leeches, but don’t you worry ‘bout that.  I know a swim hole in it that ain’t so bad.  Gonna be cold tho.  Think you can stand up?”

Sarah slowly pushed herself up.  For a moment, the world spun again, and she wasn’t sure her legs would hold.  But gradually the stars in her vision cleared.

“I can walk,” she said, as she tentatively placed one foot in front of the other.

“Hold up.  Here, least take a few sips of my water,” Genny pushed a canteen towards Sarah, who took it and gulped the icy water with gratitude.

“Easy.  I don’t know what you done to get so sick, but you drink too fast it’ll come back”

Sarah reluctantly handed the canteen back to Genny.

"Hang on, I gotta get my stilts!" Genny ran over to the base of a tree and grabbed two chopped circular slices of tree, with ropes attached.  "I'm gonna be in the circus, you know.  If I practice and I been practicin' ever day for 3 months now.  Next time they come through town, I'm gonna join up.  You ever seen a circus?"

Sarah just shook her head, not knowing what to make of Genny teetering on her crude stilts.  Their progress down to Leechy Creek was slow, as Sarah was wobbly and Genny didn't move very fast either on her logs.  Sarah's mind raced, as she worried about descending down off the ridge into the territory inhabited by more people.  So many dangers lurked in the big unknown of other people, in the reliance of strangers.  She tried to think of an alternative, but then her skin would itch with the filth, and she’d catch a whiff of her own feces, and she could barely stand it.  Once she even gagged, and desperately hoped that the other girl didn't see.  She figured it was best to just follow Genny.  More than anything, she had to get out of this dress and scrubbed.  After she got cleaned up, well then she could head back up the mountain into seclusion and safety.

The prompt this week was:  What does your character want most?

On a side note, I wrote in a rescue because so many of you who commented on my last piece suggested it.  I aim to please!

Fitness Recap May 2011 - A Great Month!

This picture is of a Quadballer, which is a form of TriggerPoint therapy.  It works much like the foam roller - to massage stressed muscles.  I've been using it on my IT band this month and it is so much better than the foam roller.  I've also continued with my ART (Active Release Therapy) sessions.

And the boys got me a new pair of running shoes for Mother's Day - I'm trying a new brand (Brooks) which I don't normally do.  But they feel much like my beloved Asics and so far so good.
Bottom line?  I've had a most excellent month!
Still trying to take things gradually, of course, but my IT band isn't hurting lately.
I was even able to get out to the track for some workouts this month!

Total running mileage:  90 (yay!!)
Yoga x 4
Abs/Core x 8

I had kind of hoped to get in a race this month, and had been thinking of a local 10K, but at the last minute I decided not to.  I'm very slow right now, and knew I would've been disappointed with my time.  Maybe in June I'll get a race in.  In the meantime, for your convenience, I've compiled a list of convenient excuses in case you skip a race (and - like me - are such an early bird that you can't use the whole 'slept in' excuse).
1.  My running clothes were dirty.
2.  My chicken told me not to.
3.  I prefer to race in poor conditions - the weather was just too nice.
4.  I'd rather run 9 miles on my own.
5.  I needed to blog that morning.
6.  I didn't want to miss breakfast.
7.  My legs were too sore from my track workout - 4 days earlier.
8.  I forgot to download the registration form.
9.  I heard they didn't have portajohns.
10.  My twins ate my running socks.
