My Cat Killed a Bat

Recently I went out on the back porch to discover our cat, Willie, sitting proudly from his night's kill.  A bat.  A bat?  Yes, a bat.  What cat kills a bat?  He looked a me slowly, and blinked as if to say, "Yes, I brought you A CREATURE!  Check it out!  Only I'm not going to eat it.  Because I don't know what the heck it is!"

Willie is one crazy hunter.  He's such a tiny cat, yet he is speedy.  He can climb a tree in seconds.  His eyes are always alert and observant.  He keeps his claws knife sharp.  I haven't had a single mouse in the minivan since I got Willie.  I wish he didn't kill birds.  Or rabbits or lizards.  But I sure don't mind all those mice and moles and rats he brings in from the fields.

Lemurs?  Yeah, they're super cute.  But I bet they can't kill bats!

Readers, have your cats or dogs brought home anything strange lately?

Good for Willie, our cats catch mostly mice though an occasional bird and small rabbit. Sometime they will leave a wonderful gift or at least part of one for us.

My cat Sparky used to bring me stuff all the time from the big field in the back yard. Except, he wasn't very efficient and most of the stuff was only half-dead. It was gross.

Poor bat. Cats can't help being predatory, though.

Well, what is a bat but a flying mouse? Willie is a mighty hunter!

We get lizards or birds on our porch regularly from the next door neighbor's cat. Mine are house cats and I sometimes wonder if the outdoor cat brings items to the porch to torment my cats! lol Have a good Wed.

killed a couple of skunks and then after they were ripped apart by vultures, they proceeded to bring back bits of skunk pelt to roll in and enjoy over and over again. phew!

Well, I don't have a cat, but yay for Willie and keeping the mini van mouse free. :)

Amazing! I could hardly believe it when I read your title! He is an awesome cat!! And brave. The lemur picture is so cool that I thought you had snapped it from the T.V.!

NO---haven't heard of that one. We have bats here --and one was sleeping on our front porch ceiling a few years ago.... I never did get those bat houses someone told me to get...

I have been told that we need a cat around here to keep the chipmunks and squirrels away... BUT--our community won't allow a cat to roam around.... SO---we just put up with the other critters.

Hugs,
Betsy

We had cats all growing up, but they never really brought us any "gifts." Maybe they just didn't like to hunt?

Our dog Skye is pretty quick but mainly focuses on lizards because that is what we have here. They sometimes make her sick :( Catching a bat is really pretty amazing!

I like bats because they eat mosquitoes and never bother us. :)
I will never have an outdoor cat. I use to spray water on neighbor cats for bothering our squirrels and birds. I like moles because they aerate the yard. :) Our kitty, Fox is an indoor cat and plays with the pups. :)

If he kills mice or anything that looks like mice, I say he's a keeper. He's one tough cat to go to battle with a bat :)

Brilliantly told! I could do with someone like him on ratting around here at the moment!

YEAH for Willie...although bats do eat mosquitos and I'll bet lemurs don't do that either!...:)JP

Yuck.

No, my cats are not hunters. Hobbes is a dry cat food sorta guy and Grace doesn't really go outside anymore. But, they were never big hunters. I guess we feed them well.

Willie must be a great hunter! Chase Bird is indoors only but he has found spiders for us in the house that we would never have known about. And it upsets him when he sees a squirrel through the window on "his" property. :-)

That sounds gross. I am thrilled my pets are all fish.

Sounds like Willie is earning his keep keeping the furry critters out of your mini van! I found a bat in our yard one day. We don't have a cat so I think it was just dying. I was scared the dogs would fool with it so I put a big rock on it until my husband got home to take care of it.

A few years ago our dogs had what we thought was one of the neighbor's chickens from a quarter mile up the road. I called the neighbor to see if it was hers. She came down and laughed. It was a wild grouse! She took it home with her! lol

My kitty, Epson is a little hunter. Sometime he take home snakes, chameleon, frogs, mouse and others. My other kitty take home 5 rabbits during the last three days. She made me crazy. I didn't know where she got it.

Luckily our cats are contained….they only capture lizards on the pool lanai. But since I've always had cats, I've been the recipient to many dead critters.
The lemurs are SO cute!!!

Good Job Willie~! Bats do eat 100's of insects so they are a good thing to have around.
My dog was good at bringing huge big snakes into the yard.. Happy they were dead....

You've been "gifted" by your Cat, alright. My Mom could use one with occasional mice in her garage and sometimes her kitchen.

Great lemur photo! I don't have bats so maybe they do. I don't want to know.

You'd think being in the country we could have a cat, but the front of the house is so close to the road that I'm scared to! Can't say I'd miss our annual visit from a mouse when winter hits, but getting the 'gifts' would freak me out too. ;)

I don't have cats or dogs. My allergies suck big time!

I did however have an outdoor cat when I lived in Georgia for a time. There they keep the dryers outside. The cat would visit me when I was doing laundry. She would kill roaches, and put them by the doorway. We called her, Xena the Warrior Cat.
