Peanut Butter Fudge and Other Things

1.  Every year in the fall I get a craving for peanut butter fudge.  It's pretty much one of my favorite things ever.  I can deny the craving only so long, and then I break down and make a batch.  It never lasts for long.
2.  I had to take some time off running.  I had a hamstring issue that wouldn't go away.  I hadn't thought about it, but it turns out the last time I took a week or more off running was three years ago.  I guess I was overdue.  It still wasn't easy for me.

3.  The batch of chickens we ordered last summer are maturing, and we had a couple of roosters.  They crack us up in the mornings while we wait for the bus.  They are trying to crow, but it kind of sounds like a dying sqwaaaaaauuuuuukkkkk instead.

4.  Because we had too many roosters, we ate one last weekend.  Always a nice thing to know where your food comes from.  I don't do any butchering, but once it's all done, I am happy to do the cooking.

5.  After we ate the rooster, I returned the bones to the crockpot with some celery, garlic, water, and seasonings.  I cooked it overnight on low to make some bone broth.  It was a little oilier than I expected, but Paul fixed it with a huge batch of rice and some veggies the next day, and it was delicious.  I also had a couple of jars for the freezer.

I keep fudge makings always. I almost made a batch yesterday, going to a football game tomorrow and thought it might be good for tailgating.

It looks delicious! My stepmom makes the peanut butter for family events in our family :)

yum peanut butter fudge, I pressure cook chickens for dog and cat food, amazing how the bones disappear to nothing! I prefer doing up the bones like you for us though.

I love your country living! Wish I could do the same. Wonderful post! (I start craving gingerbread this time of year! :-) )

And of course the fudge is lo-cal. Right?

I have never made peanut butter fudge--my niece always makes the best. So why should I even attempt it. I would love to hear those roosters. I am so glad I never had to kill chickens! But I am awfully good at eating them.

Yes, it's getting time for fudge, any kind for that matter.

I didn't know you could eat the rooster. Why didn't I know that!

Mom would cook chicken for us, but she never ate it. I think it had something to do with her childhood on the farm. :)

I would skip on the fudge, but I remember going to my cousin's farm when I was a kid...and eating fresh fried chicken. There is something just wonderful about home-grown food...although I don't think I could do it. I am a city girl and not used to killing/cleaning my own food.

Yum! I have to admit your post had me laughing out loud. I think those roosters at your house better behave themselves. If one decides to wake the family up a tad bit too early--well, we know what will be happening to him! :)

How neat, you can enjoy your chickens and eat them too. Oh, I bet that dish Paul made was more than yummy. Hugs.

It's funny to admit this, but your posts are often so fascinating with the places and events of the year where you and your family visit, that I have to remind myself that you do live on a farm. Your running is admirable, and I'd take a "sample" of the fudge-yes! Have a nice Sunday, Lisa! :)

I think my husband would love some PB fudge! Do you add a little vinegar or lemon juice when you make your bone broth. It helps dissolve the minerals in the bones, making them more nutritious than ever!

Yum. What would we do without peanut butter?

We had chickens on the farm when I was very small. I remember my mom gathering eggs in a yellow plastic basket. I never thought about it then. But now I'm wondering if some of the fried chicken I ate on Sundays was one of our chickens. I knew we ate beef and pork from the cows and pigs my dad raised, but I never thought about the chicken I ate.

I bet the Peanut Butter Fudge was yummy!

My co-worker has been bringing me eggs to eat from his farm chickens. We can't have any chickens in the city unless we try and get a permit. It may be something we try to do later on.
